The Loom Bounty: Celebrating Natural Fibers
September 5 – September 29, 2009
The Loom’s Bounty: Celebrating Natural Fibers will feature a wide variety of items woven in the past two years by the more than 60 Guild members from the greater Fort Worth area, some of whom have been weaving for over 50 years.
The United Nations named 2009 International Year of Natural Fibres and through this exhibit, the Guild hopes to increase awareness of the importance of natural fibers and display the variety of natural fibers used in weaving articles. The mission of 2009 International Year of Natural Fibres is to raise global awareness of the importance of natural fibers not only to producers and industry, but also to consumers and the environment. Articles woven from a wide range of plants including cotton, flax, ramie, bamboo; and animals including sheep, alpaca, and silk will be displayed. For more information on 2009 International Year of Natural Fibres, go to: www.naturalfibres2009.org.
According to Guild President Katie Gosko, “The process of weaving fibers is an ancient craft. In our ancestors’ day almost all clothing was handwoven. Today hand weaving is increasingly an art form for creating both functional and aesthetic pieces. The articles on exhibit in ‘The Loom’s Bounty: Celebrating Natural Fibers,’ focus on using natural fibers in a variety of woven art forms, structures and designs which exemplify the diversity that is the weaving world today.”
Founded in 1955 by five Fort Worth weavers, the Guild’s mission is to sponsor a regular time when fiber artists can come together to share techniques and sources, to mentor new members and weavers, and to promote excellence in the ancient art of weaving.
