April 3 - June 29, 2015
Karen Jacobi is a Texas based artist and teacher. She attended the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. After years of working in a variety of commercial art jobs; from courtroom sketch artist to software interface designer, she became an art teacher and currently teaches at Timber Creek High School in Keller.
Karen belongs to the Dallas based artist cooperative, SLANT which maintains a gallery of the same name in the old Valley View Mall at Preston Road and LBJ Freeway. Her work has been exhibited in Maryland, New Orleans, New York and Berlin Germany as well as many local and regional venues.
Teaching encourages experimentation and the use of a wide range of media and subject matter. Portraits and figures have always held a particular fascination for Karen, and she recently began using a layering approach to portraiture. The portraits originate from snapshots and posed photos of her daughters taken over the years. Some are painted directly on printed fabrics and papers and others are overlaid with pattern. The layered images create an interrupted space evoking memory and the transience of time.
