Honoring Women, The Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association
October 6 - October 25, 2017
Reception: October 6, 2017; 6 - 9pm
The upcoming art exhibit “Honoring Women” celebrates the fearless women who have influenced cultures throughout the world from ancient times to the present. The show is presented this October by GAGA (Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association), an all women's artist group from South Texas.
More than 45 artists have individually depicted a woman whose life or mythic story serves as both their muse and inspiration to create, to advocate, to act, and, in some cases, to just break out in song!
• An artist who often visits Port Aransas illustrates the pioneering style of Elda Mae Roberts who was one of the first women to make Mustang Island her home.
• An activist and animal lover, another artist portrays Dian Fosse as courageous, strong, determined, caring, an heroic.
• Another artist depicts San Antonio's homegrown workers' rights advocate Emma Tenayuca, who 78 years ago this month helped bring Texas' historical 1938 Pecan Sheller’s Strike to arbitration.
• And the songs? Ella Fitzgerald's jazzy vocals emanate from this particular canvas.
The exhibit is as diverse as all women; the linear progression of over 45 artworks reads like a mural of exceptional women from the myths of Athena to the real-life activism of Angela Davis.
GAGA was founded in 2011 to help promote women artists in South Texas and provides solidarity, exhibition opportunities, and an active website, hosting more than 70 member pages.
