Big Dumb Self by Cosmo Jones
July 5 – July 24, 2019
RECEPTION: Friday, July 12, 2019 @ 6 PM - 9 PM
My work has personal utility. I use it to allow my intuition and unconscious to work problems
and ideas that the conscious mind has trouble dealing with without undue attachment.
In my paintings, this takes the form of an intuitive formal process. I may start with some
degree of narrative preconceived, but that evolves - along with formal elements that
necessarily modify the narrative in any figurative image - by actively intuitive processes.
Once the image is finished, I can begin to psychoanalyze the painting, and thereby, presumably, my own thoughts. Sometimes this is a process of finding out what the “problem” was in the first place. Sometimes it’s a process of shedding attachment to my thoughts into the painting.
Whether a viewer can divine what these images specifically mean to me about the conceptual problems they’re meant to work through is irrelevant. Any image that a viewer confronts is a mirror, but all of the frontloaded intuitive thought and imagery in these images deepens the well from which the viewer can draw to find out about themselves.
