Artist Statement:

Between Monuments is an exhibition of new sculptural works by Texas-based artist Sarah DePetris. It is based on a series of “monuments” found beneath Texas highway underpasses and abandoned construction sites. Contrasting contemporary ruins with fragments and monuments from antiquity, the works reimagine overlooked and discarded piles of rubble as icons and objects of potential. They are suspended between destruction and resurrection; the made and unmade. Often site-specific, vibrant, and defying gravity, they create accessible bridges between the real and imagined. By creating plaster casts and sculptures from often invisible sites, objects, and debris, the works give them permanence and value. They transcend their own destruction to become symbols of possibility. Through repetition and time-intensive processes, they capture the tension and potential embodied in ruins and not-yet-made. They dissolve the boundaries between absence and presence, the valued and invisible, longing and the unattainable. Navigating the space between opposites, the exhibition expands the limits of reality and asks the viewer to explore the liminal spaces of possibility.
