American Objectivity

American Objectivity

April 4 - 29, 2014

I am an American product. I always will be. Through this body of repetitious, materially specific, conceptually driven works, I’m objectively exploring a wide range of dualities that are interpreted through my own lens as an American born middle-class citizen. The work is an analysis of thematic relationships between the organic and synthetic, the factory-produced and hand-made, and the impact of an individual in relation to the collective within the context of American culture. On the surface level, I am asking the viewer to respond to my work in purely aesthetic terms, but the meat and true intention of the work is a dissection of some very difficult and at times off-putting paradoxes concerning our own habits, cultural views, and identity. Where you’re born, where you grew up, where you live now, and the social/cultural groups you’re part of will all contribute to an individual/collective identity within any given culture. I am simply trying to understand my role in American culture a little better. -Seth Trent
