The eight artists presenting this exhibition all have a long history of working with wood both as an artistic and utility media. They met through membership in the Woodturners of North Texas, a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners that promotes the art and craft of woodturning.
Wood is a wonderful media for artistic expression because it is a living thing. Wood has warmth we feel and has an infinite variety of color and pattern. Every piece of wood is unique even those from the same tree. It is relatively easy to shape and can be augmented with color, texture and other materials. Perhaps more than any other media, producing wood art requires a successful collaboration between the artist and nature.
The wood lathe has been used for well over 3,000 years. As a sculpting tool, woodturning on a lathe is a subtractive process that offers an endless means of expressing form. Woodturning is an activity that is rewarding to those of every skill level from novice to expert.
We hope that visitors will enjoy this exhibition and find a new appreciation for wood as an art medium and for woodturning.
