Celebration of the Unconscious

Philip Bechtel

May 9 - 30, 2014

I began painting in 1997 because of a dream in which a feminine aspect did not speak to me. When I asked why, she said that I had ignored her my entire life. I took this to mean that I needed to get in touch with the feminine. I found that I could do this by painting, I also found that there is a part of me that I do not know which seems to do the painting. This inspiration of the feminine in me is the source of my artistic creativity, and for me it serves as a bridge to the unconscious. My paintings represent an effort by me to dialogue with and give physical dimension to my unconscious, mostly personal but at times perhaps collective. -- Philip Bechtel
