The places that inspire me are wide open, with uninterrupted horizons, big skies and color so brilliant and with such high contrast that it hurts your eyes. These images stay with me and are reflected in my work. Each piece evolving from the way I see a landscape; not simply as trees and hills, but shapes and color. My landscapes are reduced down to basic forms of color and texture, to horizontal vistas, a striation of abstraction, each containing a distant, comfortable horizon. My intent is to sustain an authentic vision and to continue to create paintings that move the viewer out of normal habits of seeing, evoke feelings of places visited, inspire the association of memories and time and encourage an interpretation beyond original intent. – Lisa Cunningham
