To Be Contained by Sonya Berg

I make work that evokes a sense of anxiety within the landscape through two seemingly disparate images – empty swimming pools and waterfalls. The cold, seemingly abandoned empty pools function as a metaphor for containment, control of the landscape, and the void, both in a material and psychological sense. The images of waterfalls are a counterpoint, the fullness of nature in a wild, active form. This juxtaposition allows the viewer to vacillate between spectator of the waterfalls and active participant attempting to exit the swimming pools.  Deliberate mark making and a select palette draw out the sense of anxiety in both the man-made and natural phenomenon.  -- Sonya Berg
