Aj Smith originally worked as a limited edition master printer for several years and through this developed an appreciation for the fine art print.  Through drawings and fine art prints he is able to explore the creative processes with the freedom to experiment.  Graphite pencil drawings and the fine art printmaking methods provide an effective means to communicate feelings and emotions where words are often inadequate.  In his current exhibition Smith hopes to reveal something of the individual's true inner self, the side of one's personality that is often held behind the secure facade most often presented during casual encounters.  Smith believes it is very difficult for us to reveal who we really are because in doing so we present opportunities for others to inflict injury.  He feels that his ability to reach deep into the personality of children in his drawings is more successful than with adults, in particular male adults.  The expressions captured in the adult male are often one of defiance, self-confidence, self importance and self security.  The accepting face of a child often reminds us of who we really are.
