Green: a paradox of abundance and scarcity

A multimedia installation by Marietta Patricia Leis

Green is an exhibit inspired by Leis’ Artist residency in Thailand. It is made up of several components: written text plates, beeswax sculptures, 27 paintings and 18 photos. There are four videos.

While embraced by the abundance of vegetation and food in Thailand the artist became acutely aware of the paradox—the deprivation in the surrounding countries of Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. The inequality of sharing the earth’s bounty seems senseless and immoral to Leis. Also the abuse of the planet by its human inhabitants endangers all the living things Leis was witness to.

This paradox produced poignant reflections that are expressed in this work... the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ so to speak. The beauty draws you to contemplate the fragility of the earth’s, and thus it’s people’s, condition.

Marietta Patricia Leis lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Leis’ work is exhibited nationally and internationally and she has an extensive resume of grants and honors. Her work extends to painting, drawings, prints and constructions. Leis received her MFA in studio art from the University of New Mexico. Her art is in public collections and she has received awards to 12 artist residencies. Leis’ current work is contemplative reductive abstractions. She wants her work to evoke a sensory, visceral response, “The aim of my art is to represent not the outward appearance of things but their inward significance.”
